Health & Safety

As a church we are called to be a people of welcome and hospitality.  Our kaupapa is one of proclaiming the love of Christ, serving and caring for all.  This needs to be balanced with providing staff a healthy and safe workplace and protection of property.  As a church we are committed to providing a working environment where staff feel healthy and safe in their work.

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it”

Hebrews 13:2

We prioritise the well-being of our people by taking all reasonable steps as outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015) and any other relevant legislation.

Our goal is to mitigate risks and promote a culture where zero harm is not just an aspiration but a reality.

You can all assist with this by encouraging your clergy, staff, colleagues, parishioners and visitors to:

  • Prioritise Safety and Wellbeing: Your safety and that of others are paramount. Please take practical steps to ensure the wellbeing of yourself and your colleagues.

  • Know and Engage with Procedures: Familiarise yourself with the parish procedures for handling potential hazards. Actively participate in managing these hazards to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

  • Speak Up and Support Each Other: If you encounter any hazards, incidents, injuries, or discomforts, don’t hesitate to report them promptly. Your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing matters. Support your colleagues in doing the same.

  • Understand Security and Emergency Procedures: Be aware of the security measures and emergency procedures relevant to your parish. Knowing what to do in various situations ensures a safe environment for all.

  • Follow Health Guidelines: Help prevent the spread of illnesses like COVID-19 by following instructions and guidelines provided to safeguard the health of everyone in the workplace.

We encourage you to visit this site regularly to review the documents and your responsibilities. We will keep you informed of any changes or updates as they occur.

If you have any questions about Health & Safety in your parish please contact the Property team at the Diocese office on 03 366 9869.
